When has smarter computing not been a good idea?

At a personal level there are lots of things we should all do but we don't. Perhaps they are so obvious and simple we keep putting them off to do other things. Take losing weight as an example. All we need to do is eat a little less and execise a little more. How many of us are actually doing that?

In my new paper "The road to Smarter Computing" I talk about how some of these simple things in IT need to be resolved. Why now? Because the rate of change in the competitive landscape is accelerating beyond the traditional 'make do and mend' approach IT has had in the past. Also, IT is frequently becoming a barrier to innovation rather than an enabler. We need to be able to improve the flexibility of business processes to remain agile and keep costs low. When has that been a bad idea?
