Building a Smarter Planet, with Smarter Computing, One Industry at a Time

Today, building a smarter planet is possibly more difficult than it has ever been. The exponential growth of mobile devices, big data and social media is a driver of today’s hyper connected society and is fundamentally transforming all parts of the global marketplace. To build a smarter planet, industries face tough industry challenges that hamper the achievement of this goal.

Today, data is growing at an unprecedented rate. Connected devices will surge to 22 billion by 2020, with digital content rocketing to 8 zettabytes by 2015 — 90% of which is unstructured. The average corporate IT infrastructure is attacked nearly 60,000 times every day… and the average total organizational cost of a data breach is $5 million.

At IBM, we have collaborated with hundreds of forward-thinking organizations worldwide to tackle these constraints daily through industry leading smarter computing innovations. Such innovations that are designed for Big Data, tuned to the task, managed with cloud computing technologies and designed to secure critical information.

IBM Power Systems are actively involved in making the smarter planet vision a reality as well, with a commitment to smarter computing technologies and solutions for clients in various industries. Many Power Systems clients have transformed their businesses, and in many cases, reshaped entire industries by infusing intelligence into the systems and processes that make the world work.

In fact, tens of thousands of customers and businesses around the world have recognized Power Systems as the ultimate system for compute-intensive workloads and have selected Power Systems to handle their infrastructure needs for scalability, resiliency and reliability.

The predictable delivery of dynamic technologies through IBM Power Systems and IBM’s commitment to investment in AIX, IBM i and Linux operating systems on Power – with more than 15,000 supported applications – has provided clients with the confidence that Power Systems are the right choice, for industry focused solutions to build a smarter planet.

This October, we introduced new enterprise Power Systems and System Software. These systems are designed to explore newer frontiers of IT industry innovations through smarter computing and are helping clients:

  • Gain actionable insight from data, structured and unstructured, to give them a competitive edge and to reduce risk
  • Do more with less, upholding lean resource management and built-in efficiency, while increasing value to their customers
  • Make it easier and less expensive to comply with growing number of industry and government regulations particularly around data security

But as we look to future industry innovation with these new systems and software, let’s also examine the breakthroughs already experienced by many industry leading Power Systems clients.

Let’s take for instance space, the next frontier. The universe is still being explored in new ways. Power technologies are at the forefront of this exploration. IBM Power Processors were feature components of the NASA’s Phoenix Mars rover in 2007, Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers in 2003 and even the Curiosity Rover, launched this year. The processing technology was chosen for its speed, security and its ability to withstand radiation and space flight.

In the medical industry, Bangkok Hospital Group partnered with IBM Power Systems to enhance its patient care services to provide smarter healthcare in Thailand. Through this collaboration, Bangkok Hospital has increased daily outpatient referral volume by 30 percent due to more efficient coordination of care and improved efficiency, safety, and continuity of care through seamless patient records across the entire Bangkok Hospital network.

IBM Watson is helping doctors apply analytics to save lives. There are more than 12,000 known diseases plague the world. Many of these diseases take years to diagnose and treat as medical knowledge doubling every five years.

This workload-optimized system based on IBM DeepQA architecture and POWER7* processor-based servers has gone on from its success on the game-show “Jeopardy!” to helping doctors apply analytics to obtain faster and more accurate diagnoses to save lives.

IBM Sequoia BlueGene*/Q supercomputer, installed at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, has taken on the grand challenge of providing a 40-fold improvement in the prediction of earthquakes to help provide safe evacuation routes for citizens.

Where would we be without these innovations?

Just imagine… there is tremendous opportunity for even greater industry focused IT developments.

With IBM Power Systems, we are dedicated to helping clients explore newer frontiers of IT innovation.
